
Apple Music launches playlist to spotlight five African influential music cities
Apple Music has announced the launch of The Sounds of Africa, a new global initiative celebrating the unique sounds and musical heritage of five major African cities: Accra, Dar es Salaam, Lagos, Nairobi and Johannesburg.
- Each playlist has been curated by a selection of artists, music executives, tastemakers, and media personalities who embody the sonic identity of their cities.
Africa’s influence on global music has reached unprecedented heights, with artists from across the continent shaping worldwide sounds. With this initiative, Apple Music aims to honour the creativity and cultural depth of African music by curating city-specific playlists and exclusive DJ mixes.
Each playlist has been curated by a selection of artists, music executives, tastemakers, and media personalities who embody the sonic identity of their cities. These collections include both new releases and classic tracks, capturing the essence of each location’s musical journey.
Lagos: The pulse of Afrobeats
Lagos remains the heart of Afrobeats and a powerhouse in Africa’s cultural scene. Contributors such as Asa, Don Jazzy and Bizzle Osikoya have provided curated tracks that reflect the city’s vibrant energy.
“This playlist is a reflection of sound, feeling and movement. Each song carries a piece of my journey,” Asa said. Don Jazzy described Lagos as “a spirited city” with a rich sonic legacy, while Bizzle Osikoya highlighted the city’s emotional depth and creative spirit.
Other curators include Motolani Alake, Bankulli, Asa Asika, Tega Oghenejobo, Manny Essien and Oluwaseun ‘Banko’ Lloyd.
The accompanying DJ mix, compiled by Spaceship Billy, blends nostalgic hits with fresh sounds. “These are tracks that remind me of Lagos and have introduced the city to the world,” he said.
Johannesburg: A city of revolution and rhythm
Johannesburg’s rich musical legacy—from kwaito to amapiano—is celebrated by contributors including Kwesta, Nandi Madida, Slikour and Samthing Soweto.
“Johannesburg lives in me and these songs remind me why,” Madida said, reflecting on the global spotlight shone on the city. ‘Run Jozi’ by K.O and AKA sounds exactly like the city’s heartbeat.”
Samthing Soweto added, “Kwaito was the soundtrack of my youth,” citing the influence of iconic radio stations and television shows on his musical upbringing.
Additional curators include Tbo Touch, Refiloe Ramogase, LootLove, Ricardo Da Costa, Robin Kohl, Catherine Grenfell and Nick Hamman.
DJ PH’s exclusive mix presents the diversity of South African music. “There’s something for everyone to enjoy,” he said.
Accra: The birthplace of highlife
Accra’s legacy spans genres like highlife, hiplife and Afro-fusion. Stonebwoy, M.anifest and Sarkodie highlight the city’s creative diversity.
“These songs pay ode to the personality of Accra,” said M.anifest, describing it as “a worldly African urban space rooted in the culture of its original people.”
Stonebwoy praised the influence of emerging talent, while Sarkodie emphasised music as a medium for capturing timeless moments.
Other contributors include Albert ‘Trebla’ Donkor, Maxwell Adjavon, Kofi ‘Funkz’ Kyei, John Hill and Glen Sho.
AD DJ’s mix captures Accra’s spirit. “It signifies happiness, freedom, friendships and good vibrations,” he said.
Nairobi: Where genres and cultures collide
Nairobi’s eclectic musical identity is reflected in a playlist curated by artists such as Xenia Manasseh, Nikita Kering and Njerae.
“These tracks represent the heartbeat of Nairobi,” said Kering. “They evoke different moods but are deeply rooted in the city’s essence.”
Xenia Manasseh described Nairobi’s music as “spiritual, revolutionary, fun and experimental,” while Njerae noted that the songs portray “the pride, love and energy of Nairobi’s citizens.”
Additional curators include Nviri the Storyteller, Tanasha Donna, Anyiko Owoko, Christine ‘Seven’ Mosha, SURAJ, EUGGY, Chrispine Obala and Camille Storm.
DJ Grauchi’s mix combines current stars with timeless classics, offering a sonic bridge across generations.
Dar es Salaam: A coastal cultural powerhouse
Known for its vibrant nightlife and musical innovation, Dar es Salaam’s playlist features selections by Tanzanian stars Marioo and Harmonize.
“These songs embody the spirit of Dar—from its romance to the resilience of its people,” said Marioo. Harmonize added, “This is the true sound of the city—a reflection of its evolving musical identity.”
The DJ mix by DJ Vasley begins with laid-back grooves and builds into the upbeat energy of Dar’s streets. “It’s a sonic journey through Dar es Salaam’s soul,” he said.
