YouTube Music arrives in South Africa
Streaming service YouTube Music is now available in South Africa.
The service offers ad-free music streaming through YouTube and Google Play Music, offline song and video downloads, background listening, streaming continuation while using other apps on a phone and listening to music on Google Home or Chromecast Audio.
In addition, YouTube Music has the Smart Search feature tailored to accommodate indigenous South African languages such as Zulu and Xhosa.
Google South Africa head of marketing Asha Patel says YouTube Music also features "a home screen that dynamically adapts to provide recommendations based on what you've played before, where you are and what you're doing" as well as "thousands of playlists across any genre, mood or activity".
Google Play Music subscribers will automatically get access to YouTube Music Premium at the same price. “Nothing changes with Google Play Music – you'll still be able to access all of your purchased music, uploads and playlists in Google Play Music just like always,” Patel said.
YouTube Music will now compete with other streaming services available in South Africa, including Apple Music, Spotify and Deezer, which share the same pricing at R59.99 (about $4).
However, YouTube Music is offering a three-month trial for new users. It also has a family plan option where six users can share a single subscription at R89.99. The users of the plan need to be 13 years or older, own a Google account and reside in the same household as the family manager.
