SA: MTK teams up with Shwi Mantombazane on new single
Emerging South African musician MTK has released a new single titled ‘Ukuphila Nawe’ in collaboration with Maskandi group Shwi Mantombazane.
MTK.
The song, produced by DJ Teddy, blends contemporary Afro-influenced sounds with traditional maskandi elements. It marks a cross-generational collaboration between the rising artist and one of the genre’s established acts.
“My upbringing shaped me completely as an artist,” MTK said. “A lot of the pain, struggles and experiences I went through became the foundation of my music. That’s why people connect with my songs because they come from a real place and reflect everyday life situations.”
MTK said music became an outlet during difficult periods in his childhood.
“Music was always my escape growing up. Whenever life became difficult, music gave me peace and hope. Over time, it became more than just an escape – it became my purpose and a way to express myself,” he said.
The collaboration with Shwi Mantombazane came after discussions about producing a song that could resonate across generations of listeners.
“Working with Shwi Mantombazane came naturally because we’ve always respected each other’s work,” MTK said. “The collaboration started through conversations about creating something powerful that would connect different generations of music lovers. Once we got into the studio, the chemistry was real and everything flowed naturally.”
He added that working with the group held personal significance.
“Collaborating with such a legendary maskandi group means a lot to me. It’s a blessing and also a sign of growth in my career. These are artists I grew up listening to, so sharing a song with them is both humbling and motivating. It also shows that music can unite different styles and generations.”
A member of Shwi Mantombazane said the collaboration reflected continuity within the Maskandi tradition.
“MTK is the real deal. He came from pain and street survival, yet his spirit is strong. Working with him on this song felt right – old maskandi voice meeting the new generation. This track carries our culture, perseverance and hope. The future of our music is in good hands,” the group said.
The release of ‘Ukuphila Nawe’ comes as MTK continues to develop his career after signing with Rootkey Entertainment.
He said the song’s message is intended to encourage listeners facing personal challenges.
“Where you come from does not define where you’re going. No matter how hard life gets, you must keep believing in yourself and keep working toward your dreams. Pain can become power if you use it the right way,” MTK said.
MTK, whose real name is Thandanani Xaba, was born in Emsinga in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal. According to the artist, his early life was marked by hardship after he left home at the age of 12 following conflict with his stepfather.
