Zolani Mahola signs inks Virgin Music Group deal, announces new single
South African singer and performer Zolani Mahola has signed a global deal with Virgin Music Group, marking a new phase in her solo career ahead of the release of new music later this year.

The agreement comes as Mahola prepares to release her first project under the partnership, a single titled ‘XhosaNostra’, which is scheduled for release on 4 June.
Mahola is widely known as the former lead vocalist of Freshlyground, a role she held for 17 years. During her time with the group, she toured internationally and collaborated with artists including Stevie Wonder, B.B. King, Aretha Franklin, Yo-Yo Ma, Msaki and Yvonne Chaka Chaka. She also contributed to ‘Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)’ by Shakira.
Since launching her solo career, Mahola's work has expanded into theatre, film and other creative projects. Her achievements include performances at Carnegie Hall, a Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards award for Best Actress and a South African Music Awards award for Best Produced Album for her solo release ‘Thetha Mama’.
Mahola is also an ambassador for Sea Change Project and co-created the podcast Back To The Water with Pippa Ehrlich, known for directing the documentary My Octopus Teacher. The pair also collaborated on the soundtrack for Pangolin: Kulu’s Journey and are currently working on a feature-length documentary centred on Mahola's life and music.
Her forthcoming single ‘XhosaNostra’ features the late Bravo Le Roux in one of his final recordings and was produced by Hannah V.
The release will serve as the lead single from Mahola’s forthcoming album, People Power, which is expected to explore a range of musical styles while drawing on themes of identity and storytelling.
The signing with Virgin Music Group represents a new commercial and creative partnership as Mahola prepares to release new material to international audiences.
