- The seven young South African musicians have graduated with Bachelor of Music degrees from the renowned Manhattan School of Music in New York City.
The graduates are Danno Petersen (drummer), Kabelo Mokhatla (percussionist), Lifa Arosi (saxophonist and composer), Motswedi “Moe” Modiba (vocalist and performer), Nhlanhla Mahlangu (jazz artist), Simon Manana (multi-instrumentalist and improviser) and Zoe Molelekwa (pianist and composer).
The scholarship, established in 2019 by the Hugh Masekela Heritage Foundation in partnership with the Manhattan School of Music and the ELMA Music Foundation, honours the legacy of the legendary South African trumpeter and cultural icon Hugh Masekela. It provides talented South African musicians with access to world-class education while promoting artistic excellence and cultural authenticity.
“These exceptional young South African musicians embody the spirit and legacy of Bra Hugh — a tireless advocate for music, education, and African heritage – encapsulated in his mantra ‘Love Learn & Teach,” a statement on the foundation’s social media page reads. “Their achievements stand as a testament to the power of opportunity, mentorship, and cultural pride.”
Hugh Masekela Heritage Foundation spokesperson added: “These graduates have not only honed their craft on a global stage but have also carried Hugh Masekela’s vision of African excellence and innovation into the world. Their success is a proud moment for South Africa and a powerful reminder of what investment in youth can achieve.”
The foundation is currently working to ensure the continuation of the scholarship programme and plans to announce applications for a future intake in due course.
