Open call: Piano duo and string quartet compositions
The University of Music and Performing Arts Graz has announced an open call for new compositions for mixed ensemble, combining piano duo with string quartet instrumentation.
The initiative seeks works written for either two pianos or piano four hands, paired with two violins, viola and violoncello.

Purpose of the call
- The primary aim is to encourage the creation of new chamber music compositions
- The selected winning work will become a compulsory piece in the repertoire for all piano duos admitted to the competition
- It will also be premiered during the final round of the Piano Duo category at the 13th International Competition “Franz Schubert and Modern Music” in February 2028
Prize
- Prize money (donated by GRAWE – Grazer Wechselseitige Versicherung AG): €5 000 (about $5860)
- The amount is gross and subject to Austrian tax regulations
Additional outcomes for the winning composition include:
- Inclusion as a compulsory repertoire piece for all participating piano duos
- Performance during the competition final in Graz
- Recording of selected performances during the competition
- Inclusion of jury-preselected works in the university’s music library
- Eligibility and participation
- Open to composers of all nationalities, including stateless persons
- Age limit: born 1986 or later
- Application fee: €30
- Submission deadline: 10 March 2027
Submission requirements
Applications must be submitted via MUVAC from 10 December 2026 and must include:
- Completed application form
- Anonymous score (without name or identifying details)
- Copy of passport or identity document
- Jury and selection process
- The jury will consist of five internationally recognised composers and instrumentalists (full composition to be announced)
- The selection process is conducted in two anonymous stages:
- A preliminary jury reviews all submissions and creates a shortlist
- A main jury evaluates shortlisted works before making a final decision
- Final results will be communicated by the end of July 2027
Work requirements and performance conditions
- Composers should note the following conditions for the commissioned work:
- Electronics are not permitted
- Set-up must be practical, reversible and suitable for live performance conditions
- The winning work will be distributed to selected competition participants in advance
- Rehearsals for performers will take place one day before the premiere
- A moderated exchange between the composer and competitors will be arranged during the competition period
Premiere
The winning composition will be performed during the final round of the Piano Duo category at the 13th International Competition “Franz Schubert and Modern Music” in February 2028, alongside a selected string quartet from the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.
