Basadi in Music Awards opens 2026 nominations, expands across Africa
The Basadi in Music Awards has opened nominations for its 2026 edition as the platform marks its fifth year of recognising women in the music and entertainment industries.
All award categories are open to African artists across the continent, with submissions closing on 30 May.
Organisers confirmed that nominations opened this week and will close on 30 May at 11.59 p.m. CAT.
Founded to celebrate the achievements of women across the music sector, the awards recognise artists, DJs, presenters, producers, journalists and artist managers, among other industry professionals.
This year’s edition will expand beyond South Africa for the first time, with nominations now open to women from across the African continent. International audiences will also be able to participate in the nomination process.
Basadi in Music Awards founder and chief executive Hloni Modise-Matau said the opening of nominations marked the beginning of another awards cycle while reflecting the platform’s broader growth.
“Opening nominations each year is a defining moment for us. It signals not only the start of awards season, but the continued growth of a movement that uplifts and recognises women across every corner of the music industry,” Modise-Matau said.
“As we expand across Africa and invite global participation, we are building a platform that is inclusive, representative and forward looking.”
Joburg City Theatres chief executive Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema described the continental expansion as a move aimed at increasing representation and international visibility for African women in music.
“As we mark five years of Basadi in Music Awards, we are proud to witness its evolution from a national initiative into a powerful continental movement,” she said.
“The theatre serves as a cultural gateway, connecting African talent to international audiences and positioning Basadi in Music Awards as a globally relevant celebration of excellence.”
Technology company Black Mobile will again provide the SMS platform supporting audience participation across borders.
Black Mobile chief executive Leroy Lyon Monaheng said the company’s involvement was intended to broaden access and participation across Africa.
“Africa’s story is told through its people and the women in this industry are among its most powerful narrators,” Monaheng said.
“For the second consecutive year, Black Mobile is proud to support Basadi in Music Awards. By powering the SMS platform across borders, we are expanding access and enabling broader participation across the continent.”
The full list of categories can be accessed here and open to the public, music industry professionals and other stakeholders across Africa. Submissions can be made via the official SMS platform and the Basadi in Music Awards website.
