Johannesburg Musical Society announces five-concert series
The Johannesburg Musical Society (JMS) has announced a new season of Sunday concerts, beginning on 19 November 2024 and running through 13 April 2025. This five-concert series promises an exciting line-up featuring world-class musicians from South Africa and beyond, with each performance offering a unique and diverse programme.
The series kicks off on Sunday, 19 November, with the Damato Trio, led by acclaimed British violinist Daniel Rowland. Joining him are international cellist Maja Bogdanović (Serbia/France) and celebrated British pianist Anthony Hewitt. Together, they’ll present a programme that spans Beethoven, Sibelius, Tchaikovsky, Debussy, and Piazzolla.
In 2025, the series resumes on 19 January with the remarkable young pianist George Harliono (Indonesia/UK), who recently won the Silver Medal at the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. His programme includes pieces by Rameau, Chopin, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and Stravinsky, showcasing his dynamic range and technical skill.
On 23 February, JMS welcomes Japanese-American violinist Mayumi Kanagawa, a prize-winner of the Long-Thibaud Crespin and Moscow Tchaikovsky competitions. Known for her “rich, dark sound”, Kanagawa will be accompanied by acclaimed South African pianist Megan-Geoffrey Prins, promising an evening of emotive and intricate performances.
The Baxter Trio from Cape Town takes the stage on 16 March, featuring South African pianist François du Toit alongside violinist Farida Bacharova (South Africa) and cellist Graham du Plessis (South Africa). This trio of esteemed musicians will bring their compelling interpretations to Johannesburg audiences.
Closing out the season on 13 April is Israeli pianist Yaron Kohlberg, a past winner of the Cleveland International Piano Competition and current President of the Cleveland Competition. Kohlberg, known as “the pianist with the golden hands,” has performed at many of the world’s leading venues across Europe and America.
