The Curated Programme, formerly referred to as the Main Programme, is a core component of the festival. It features a selection of works chosen by the artistic director and artistic committee, based on artistic merit, innovation, and relevance. Artists and companies are encouraged to apply, although some works may also be invited directly by the festival team.
Applications are open to artists, producers, and creative practitioners working across disciplines. The deadline for submissions is 3 October 2025 (midnight SAST), and applications must be submitted online via the National Arts Festival website.
Applicants may submit work under one of three categories:
- Completed works: Fully realised projects that have been publicly presented and are ready to tour. These may be new or previously staged.
- Works in development: Projects still in progress that require further development before public presentation.
- New ideas: Conceptual or early-stage proposals not yet in production. These may be considered for future engagement or development.
While the festival is mainly focused on Completed Works and Works in Development for the 2026 edition, submissions under New Ideas are welcome as part of a broader dialogue with the artistic community.
“The selection process for the 2026 programme will yet again challenge us to consider the extraordinary depth and breadth of this country’s creative imagination,” artistic director Rucera Seethal said. “At its heart, the Curated Programme represents a moment in time for our culture and our nation. For the Artist Programme team, this is an exciting time to engage with artistic ideas and work proposals, exposing directions for next year’s festival.”
There is no specific theme applicants are required to respond to. The artistic team will shape the final programme by identifying common threads and ideas across submissions.
Applicants may submit up to two proposals, and all entries will be reviewed by the artistic director and committee. Shortlisted applicants will be notified by 14 November 2025.
