Music takes centre stage at Cape Town’s first Classics on Turf
The inaugural Classics on Turf Cape Town edition delivered an evening of orchestral excellence and innovation on Saturday 8 November, pairing the sophistication of classical performance with the spirit of sport.
Classics on Turf will next return to Johannesburg at the Killarney Country Club on 14 November.
Following three successful years in Johannesburg, the event made its Western Cape debut at the Steenberg Golf Club and the Norval Foundation, combining a day of golf with a night of live music under the direction of conductor Kutlwano Masote.
The musical programme featured a collaboration between jazz pianist Paul Hanmer and soprano Lynelle Kenned, whose performances bridged classical and jazz traditions. The concert, staged at the Norval Foundation, explored themes of unity and creativity through a dynamic blend of genres.
A standout element of the evening was the introduction of an AI-powered music generator that allowed guests to help compose a new orchestral piece in real time. Audience members used their mobile devices to submit responses about their mood and musical preferences. These inputs were processed and printed into a live orchestral score, performed minutes later by the ensemble. The exercise demonstrated how technology can be used to merge human creativity with machine-generated innovation.
The day began with golfers and enthusiasts participating in rounds of play and a Beyond the Greens introductory clinic for newcomers to the sport. The combination of golf and music reflected the event’s broader aim of promoting collaboration across disciplines.
Telkom, the event’s primary partner, facilitated the technology integration. “We step into this space not as spectators but as collaborators, connecting people and ideas as seamlessly as the music itself,” Telkom chief marketing officer Gugu Mthembu said.
Event director Mqondisi Gumede described the project as a celebration of “the power of sport, symphony, and connection,” highlighting the event’s role in showcasing South African talent and creativity.
The Cape Town edition drew participation from partners across media and industry, with on-air competitions and social media activations allowing wider audience engagement.
Classics on Turf will next return to Johannesburg at the Killarney Country Club on 14 November. The upcoming edition will include a full orchestral concert conducted by Kutlwano Masote, featuring acclaimed vocalist Judith Sephuma, alongside an eighteen-hole golf experience and an introductory clinic.
