The much-anticipated gala event will take place on 22 May 2025 at the Mandela Auditorium, Joburg Theatre, marking the global relaunch of the show ahead of its permanent residency at the House of Sisters Grimm in London’s West End.
INALA, meaning “abundance of goodwill” in Zulu, is a rich celebration of South African culture, combining powerful storytelling, vibrant choreography, and world-class music. The production features a musical score co-written between 2009 and 2014 by the late legendary Joseph Shabalala, founder of the world-renowned Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and Ella Spira MBE. The 2025 iteration also proudly includes the voice of Ndaba Mandela and choreography by Mark Baldwin OBE.
Since its world premiere at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2014, INALA has captivated audiences on some of the world’s most prestigious stages, including the Royal Albert Hall, Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, and Hampton Court Palace. The production has been performed for royalty and earned standing ovations across the globe. In 2016, it received a Grammy nomination for Best World Music Album.
The Johannesburg premiere is not only a return to South African roots but also a celebration of INALA’s journey and impact. The show has reached millions through international performances and digital platforms and has benefited over 12 000 children through its outreach programmes.
As part of the upcoming gala, Sisters Grimm will offer two distinctive experiences Immersive Experience (Invitation Only) and Performance Experience (General Admission). The public can attend the full live performance, an emotionally charged and culturally rich celebration of South Africa’s spirit, heritage, and creative excellence. The gala night is expected to draw a diverse audience including global celebrities, athletes, diplomats, and leaders from the cultural and business sectors.
Founded by creative producer and former Royal Ballet ballerina Pietra Mello-Pittman and painter-composer Ella Spira MBE, Sisters Grimm is a B Corp-certified, multicultural and female-led organisation committed to fostering global cross-cultural artistic collaborations. Their work has been recognised at the highest level, including MBE honours bestowed by King Charles III for their contributions to international trade and the arts.
