Gallo Music marks 100 years of South African musical heritage
Gallo Music, Africa’s oldest surviving recording company, will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2026 with a series of events honouring its century-long contribution to South Africa’s music industry. The commemorative programme, beginning in February 2026, will reflect on Gallo’s legacy as a pioneer in music production, publishing, and artist development.
The Music Arena (Gallo’s holding company) CEO Antos Stella.
Founded in 1926 by Eric Gallo, the company began as a small record label in Johannesburg and grew into one of the most influential forces in South African music. Its rooster logo has become synonymous with the evolution of the country’s soundscape, from traditional styles to contemporary genres.
Over the decades, Gallo Music has worked with some of South Africa’s most celebrated artists, including Solomon Linda, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, and Lucky Dube. The label’s catalogue spans a wide range of genres such as jazz, marabi, mbaqanga, maskandi, reggae, gospel, pop, house, and kwaito — many of which have shaped the nation’s cultural identity and resonated internationally.
Gallo’s recordings have received recognition through numerous awards, including international honours such as the Grammy, MTV, and MOBO Awards, as well as South African accolades like the SAMAs, Kora All Africa Music Awards, and Crown Gospel Music Awards.
In addition to its anniversary events, Gallo will partner with the Black Coffee Benefit Gala Dinner later this month. Proceeds from the gala will support food banks and non-profit organisations in the Eastern Cape, as well as the Black Coffee Music Academy.
The centenary celebrations will also highlight Gallo’s transition into the digital era. Planned initiatives will explore how the company is adapting its extensive archive for online access and expanding opportunities for emerging artists.
Antos Stella, CEO of The Music Arena — Gallo’s holding company — said the milestone represents both a moment of reflection and a commitment to the future. “There is something profoundly special about a company turning a hundred years old,” Stella said. “Gallo Music’s story carries a history of a people and a legacy that has endured for decades. This centenary is an opportunity to honour our past while looking ahead to the next century of South African music.”
Further details about Gallo Music’s centenary events and public participation opportunities will be announced in the coming months.
