South African singer, songwriter and dancer Brie Lee has died at the age of 28 following a battle with cancer.
The artist, whose real name was Liyema Ndibi, died in Cape Town on 30 May after undergoing treatment for more than a year, according to a statement released by her family.
Born in the Eastern Cape and based in Cape Town, Brie Lee was known for her blend of gospel and pop music, often referred to as “Gospop”. She built a regional following through her live performances and songwriting, drawing on themes of faith, personal experience and hope.
In a statement shared on social media, the family confirmed her death and paid tribute to her contribution to music.
“It is with deep sadness that we confirm the passing of Brie Lee, also known as Liyema Ndibi,” statement reads. “She was a beloved artist, a voice, and a messenger with bright and sharp talent.
“We are grateful to everyone who supported her and kept her in prayer. Thank you to all who donated toward her amputation. She did undergo the procedure, but later experienced breathing difficulties. Every day was a fight, and she fought bravely until her last breath.”
The family added that funeral arrangements would be announced at a later date.
Brie Lee was associated with the growing Xhosa Wave music movement and was recognised for incorporating her home language into her music. She gained attention for her vocal versatility and commitment to using music to communicate messages rooted in spirituality and personal reflection.
Tributes have been shared across social media following news of her death. Among those paying tribute was fellow artist and collaborator Efa Ibhinqa Lokuqala, also known as Eve.
“Brie Lee was more than a friend, she was a sister in music,” Efa wrote. “Her legacy will live on through her art and the impact she had on us all.”
The two artists collaborated on the song ‘Singenile’ alongside Blue K and Yara Lane.
Brie Lee’s death comes months after the passing of Bravo Le Roux, another rising figure within the Xhosa Wave movement, who died in January 2026.
The losses have prompted an outpouring of grief from artists, fans and members of South Africa's music community.
In its statement, the family said Brie Lee wished to be remembered for the values expressed through her music.
“She always wanted to be remembered for preaching truth through her artistry. Honouring that truth is how we honour her.”
