SA mourns kwaito legend Mapaputsi
South Africans are mourning the passing of kwaito legend Mapaputsi who died on 5 September after a short illness.
Mapaputsi’s death was confirmed by his family in a statement. “The family of the South African kwaito legend Sandile Ngwenya, popularly known as Mapaputsi, is saddened to confirm to the media and public the passing of their son,” the statement said. “Mapaputsi met his untimely death in the late hours of Thursday, 5 September 2024, after a short illness.”
Local artists and industry professionals took to social media to convey their condolences following news of the musician’s passing.
“Mapaputsi born in Zola, Soweto, was a pioneering Kwaito artist, known for his iconic 2001 album Izinja,” RiSA wrote. “RiSA would like to send heartfelt condolences to the Ngwenya family, friends and fans for their loss.” Mapaputsi was known for his hit single ‘Izinja’.
Local musician Phila Madlingozi wrote: “It’s grateful that I had the honour of being around your genius.”
Local rapper Nose also wrote: “Mapaputsi sure blessed us with good music and memories. RIP to the legend.”
Born on 11 February in Zola, Soweto, Mapaputsi grew up with fellow legend Zola 7 and became known for his unique sound and energetic performances. His career took off in 2001 with his breakthrough album Izinja, earning him multiple awards, including Best Kwaito Artist and Best Kwaito Song. He continued to shape the genre with albums like Kleva and Indoda. Beyond music, Mapaputsi ventured into business, philanthropy, and mentoring younger artists.
