
SA: Maskandi artist Khuzani Mpungose receives gold, platinum plaques
Universal Music Group (UMG) South Africa paid tribute to maskandi legend Khuzani Mpungose on 14 May, celebrating his 15-year contribution to the music industry during the UMG maskandi showcase held at the label’s offices in Rosebank, Johannesburg.

The event, a vibrant celebration of maskandi music, served both as a showcase of emerging talent and a heartfelt tribute to Khuzani, whose impact on the genre has shaped it into a powerful force within South African music and culture.
Khuzani, one of maskandi’s most influential figures, was honoured with five plaques recognising major milestones in his career including three gold certifications for his album Inja Nogodo and singles ‘Imbongolo’ and ‘Angidlali Nezingane’, one platinum certification: for the hit ‘Umjolo Lowo’ and one double-platinum certification for the widely celebrated single ‘Ijele’.
“I am truly humbled and honoured,” Khuzani said. “Thank you for walking this journey with me.”
The showcase featured performances by some of the genre’s brightest stars including rising maskandi duo Amasinamuva Amasha and solo artist uMlabalaba. A standout moment of the evening came from Mbuzeni, whose dynamic live set included dazzling guitar skills and a unique maskandi-style cover of Rihanna’s global hit ‘Diamonds’, earning a standing ovation from attendees.
The event reinforced UMG South Africa’s commitment to promoting African music and cultural heritage, with a focus on elevating maskandi as a genre that reflects the country’s rich storytelling traditions and rural roots.
“This showcase not only celebrates our legends, like Khuzani, but also serves as a platform to spotlight new talent and the evolving sound of Maskandi,” a UMG representative said.
