The Mavin Records act is the latest West African act to chalk up the feat, following in the footsteps of the likes Burna Boy, Wizkid, CKay, and Davido. Last month, Tems, who shot to global notice after featuring on Wizkid’s chart-topping 2020 single ‘Essence’, also crossed 1 billion streams on Spotify.
Rema’s latest achievement was powered by the global success of submissions like ‘Calm Down’, which recently went diamond in France and received a gold certification in the US.
Earlier this year, Rema also joined Boomplay's Golden Club after crossing 100 million streams on the streamer.
Published by Mavin Global/Jonzing World, the song is taken from Rema’s debut album Rave & Roses, which was released in March. It is co-produced by Andre Vibez and Michael ‘London’ Hunter.
The song was recently updated with a fresh verse from US singer Selena Gomez, and currently boasts 258 million YouTube streams and rounded up 2022 as the second most watched music video on YouTube in Nigeria and the ninth most streamed song on Spotify in Nigeria. Last month, it also became the first track to top the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry’s newly-launched singles chart for the Middle East and North Africa.
Among Afrobeats’ most explosive new voices, Rema’s debut album took him on tour around the world and earned him nominations at notable international awards platforms such as the MOBOs in the UK.
He recently contributed to the Chapter X compilation album alongside other Mavin signees in celebration of the label’s 10th anniversary this year. He has also been programmed for an all-star concert to commemorate the label’s anniversary on 16 December.
