Nigeria: Patoranking drops new single ahead of fifth album
Nigerian musician Patoranking has released a new single titled ‘No Jonze’, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his career and offering a preview of his forthcoming fifth studio album.
Patoranking.
The track draws on the raw rhythms of late 1990s and early 2000s Galala music, a genre rooted in the streets of Ajegunle, Lagos, and blends it with contemporary Afro-dancehall influences. Built around themes of perseverance and self-belief, No Jonze celebrates hard work and determination, transforming Lagos street slang into a motivational phrase that encourages listeners to stay focused and seize every opportunity.
Describing Galala as the “stepchild of dancehall”, Patoranking has long credited the sound as a major influence on his music. Characterised by its energetic percussion and improvisational style, Galala has historically served as a form of expression and resistance for marginalised communities. In ‘No Jonze’, Patoranking revisits the culture that shaped his artistic roots while situating it within the global Afrobeats conversation.
The song also explores how Lagos’ street rhythms connect with international sounds such as Dominican Republic’s dembow, Uganda’s kidandali, and Kenya’s gengetone. Through the single and his forthcoming album, Patoranking aims to highlight the diversity within African music and counter perceptions that Afrobeats is creatively stagnant.
The official music video, directed by Nigerian filmmaker Director K, was filmed in Ajegunle, often referred to as “the Kingston of Nigeria”. It features cameos from Galala pioneers Marvelous Benjy and Allen B, as well as a mural honouring key figures in the genre’s history, including Daddy Showkey, Daddy Fresh, Oritse Femi, Baba Fryo, African China, and Danfo Drivers.
Visually, the video captures the spirit of 1990s Lagos, blending street culture, dance, and fashion with a contemporary edge. Through its setting and storytelling, it pays tribute to the community that influenced Patoranking’s artistry while reinforcing the track’s central message of resilience and authenticity.
‘No Jonze’ sets the tone for Patoranking’s upcoming album, which is expected to delve deeper into his roots and explore the intersection between local culture and global music trends.
‘No Jonze’ is available for streaming and download on various digital platforms.
