To mark the video’s release, Adekunle Gold is hosting an exclusive celebration in Lagos tonight in collaboration with The Macallan.
Coco Money follows the success of Gold’s heartfelt ballad Obimo, but shifts the tone dramatically with an infectious, sun-soaked Afro-fusion anthem driven by bold lyricism and vibrant production. Nigerian producers Niphkeys and Seyifunmi crafted the track’s dynamic sound, which features a clever sample from Rihanna’s ‘Bitch Better Have My Money’, reimagined as a bold, rhythmic chant.
The track also makes history with the first-ever use of the traditional Elegbe call-and-response riff in a mainstream Afropop single. Rooted in Yoruba Fuji music traditions, the riff adds a raw, percussive edge that connects the song to Nigeria’s cultural and musical heritage.
Musically, the production blends rich orchestral flourishes and pitched electronic vocal layers, creating a futuristic soundscape that remains anchored in ancestral rhythm.
Lyrically, Adekunle Gold mixes swagger with sharp social commentary. Lines such as “Kowope, Kowope – b*tch better have my money” and Yoruba proverbs like “Ase to ba d’eko waa ko’gbon” (when you get to Lagos, you’ll learn how to be smart) highlight the hustle and wisdom tied to urban survival. He weaves themes of wit, wealth, and West African identity into a layered anthem that both critiques societal values and inspires celebration.
