FIFA World Cup to host East African musicians
Ethiopia’s Sami Dan, Uganda’s Ykee Benda and Tanzania’s Diamond Platnumz will perform their local versions of this year's FIFA World Cup anthem ‘Colours'.
- Ykee Benda says it's every musician’s dream to play at global stages such as the FIFA World Cup.
The Coca-Cola-sponsored project will see the three artists perform at the World Cup in Russia, which runs from 14 June to 15 July.
Ykee Benda told Music In Africa that it was every musician’s dream to be featured on a massive global stage such as the World Cup.
“I am happy to represent my country and to bring the world together through music,” he said.
“I am also so much excited because this is a rare opportunity, especially for someone like me who started music two years ago. Last year was a fabulous year for me and by the look of things 2018 will be even better.”
‘Colours’ was originally composed by American singer Jason Derulo and features South African rapper Cassper Nyovest. Mozambique's Lizha James was also invited by Coca-Cola to create her own version of the anthem.
East Africa was previously represented by Uganda’s Jose Chameleone who performed at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and Somalian rapper K’naan who performed at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Ykee Benda is currently in Kenya for a media tour in a bid to promote his music and grow his Kenyan audience.
“I am all about good music and blending different genres,” he said. “I have been receiving so much love from East Africa and that was confirmation that I should connect with my fans and create opportunities for collaboration with other East African artist.”
The singer plans to host more promotional tours in the region.
