Call for registration: Music business workshops in SA
The Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO), in collaboration with Concerts SA and IKS Cultural Consulting, is calling on singers, instrumentalists, composers and arrangers to register for music business workshops in Durban and Cape Town.
The workshops will be held at The Jazzy Rainbow in Morningside, Durban, and at the Baxter Theatre Centre in Rondebosch, Cape Town, on 27 August and 28 September, respectively. They are designed to orient and educate SAMRO members and Concerts SA applicants. The sessions will focus on digital mobility and the world of making and promoting artists’ work online.
The first workshop kicked off on 23 August at the Old Mutual AMPD Studios in Johannesburg and featured guest speakers including IKS director Andre Le Roux, Old Mutual AMPD Studios operations manager Nosisi Ngakane, SAMRO Foundation manager James French, DJ and journalist Atiyyah Khan, and copyright lawyer Bongani Mdakane, among others.
The workshops include the following topics:
- Show me the money: fundraising, sponsorship and partnerships.
- Is a verbal contract worth the paper it’s written on: Agreements and contracts.
- The jobs not done till the paper trails: compliance and evidence.
- Why or how to DIY in the digital age: Marketing your music and yourself.
- To free or not free, that is the question: Technical production and streaming.
- Digital Futures: Researching the future of the music industry.

“Please note that numbers are limited due to COVID-19 protocols, and should you not be registered you will not be allowed into the venue,” a statement reads. “However, the workshops will be streamed online.”
To prepare for the workshops, participants must read the Digital Futures: Livestreaming in South Africa Report here.
