Sam Mbaluka
Bio
Mbaluka is a multi-talented musician and bass player, born and raised in Nairobi, known for his groovy, soulful, and jazzy playing. Growing up in a musical family with his father as a church music director, Mbaluka developed a deep passion for music early on. He got his inspiration and developed his sound for jazz fusion by listening to legends like Joe Zawinul and Jaco Pastorius, while also being a lover of African cultural music.
After studying upright bass at the Dhow Countries Music Academy in Zanzibar, Mbaluka’s unique sound earned him spots at major festivals like Sauti za Busara, Safaricom International Jazz Festival, Bayimba, Harare International Festival of the Arts (Zimbabwe), and in Europe. He has collaborated with artists across genres such as jazz, reggae, funk, neo-soul, and Afro House DJs.
A strong advocate for community development, Mbaluka runs the Watoto Arts and Music Center, where he nurtures young talent, and curates the Mtaani Jazz Festival, a free-entry event promoting local and international music. He also leads an initiative to spread live music through Nairobi's public transport system.
Mbaluka is preparing to release a solo jazz album with a unique East African touch.
