Bio
Growing up in Pretoria, Melorie Jane started the afro-funk, jazz band called ALL the MORE, in 2012. The group performed at venues such as Hard Rock Café Menlyn, Marais Street Acoustics and +27 Café.
The group broke up in 2017 when Melorie Jane moved to Franschhoek, performing under her own name in various jazz, funk and contemporary jazz set-ups. She released her debut single 'Till the morning comes in 2017 and her EP Different View, performed by her quintet, in 2018. Melorie completed her Bachelor's degree in music at the University of Pretoria and graduated with her Masters in Music Performance (specializing in jazz composition and piano performance) at the University of Stellenbosch in 2021.
Inspired by contemporary South African jazz musicians, Melorie Jane released her debut album, 'More or Less' in November of 2021. The album won titles for Best Jazz Album (Public Vote Category) and Best Jazz Female Artist in the Mzantsi Jazz Awards 2022 and has gained significant interest on Radio and Television shows, including the Expresso morning show, All Jazz Radio, Metro FM, CCFM and Vuka Online Jazz radio. Her music has also been Featured on internationally acclaimed radio station, Sirius XM Real Jazz by Seton Hawkins as part of a special about Contemporary South African jazz composers.
The album deals with challenges experienced by artists through the lockdown in South Africa, contemplating themes of isolation and finding a sense of home, of resilience, longing, friendship and joy.
Melorie Jane currently performs in and around Cape Town, and has featured at events such as the 2020 Woordfees at the Spier amphitheater, as part of the University of Stellenbosch Jazz band who performed with Anna Davel, Gloria Bosman and Lana Crowster. She also performed as a trio with Dalisu Ndlazi and Sphelelo Mazibuko at the Mzantsi Jazz Awards 2022, at the Soweto Theatre alongside South African jazz artists Khaya Mghlangu, Kgethi Nkotsi, Malcom Jiyane, Roland Moses and Sindile Masilela. As a students, Melorie Jane performed with her quintet as a student-act at the DSG Auditorium at the Standard Bank National Arts Festival in 2019.
