Zim: Don Franco Tafari drops The Sun of Sam album
South Africa-based Zimbabwean contemporary reggae dancehall artist Don Franco Tafari has released a 19-track album titled The Sun of Sam.
- Don Franco Tafari.
A double meaning is attached to the name of the album given to Don Franco Tafari by his father Samuel, also known as Sam, who used to call him “my sun”, which also meant “my son”.
Artists that are featured on the album include Karabo, Turbulence, Gappy Ranks and Prosper Fi Real.
“This is an important project due to the messages it conveys and also because it is filled with different sounds that will resonate with different cultures and people,” Don Franco Tafari said. “As a musician, there are certain seasons in which you are moved by a certain sound or a certain style, so for the album I needed something that encompassed all the sounds that made sense to me as the seasons changed.”
Don Franco Tafari began recording the album five years ago at his Legion 16 Records, but there were pauses during the production process to avoid monotony.
“I wanted to not only record something unique and different, but one which also portrayed what I was feeling at any given moment during recording. As a musician, I felt the need to document everything that has happened in my life for the past five years and there is no better way to do it than through music. The project is filled with highs and lows, triumphs and losses, all of which can be felt in the same way as when the emotions were highlighted. I believe this is my best body of work to date.”
