Wizkid, Jidenna set for AfrikCan Music Festival
In a few days Nigerian pop star Wizkid and Nigerian-American singer Jidenna will headline the AfrikCan festival in the US. Poised as the ‘first annual celebration of Africa’s positivity and creativity,’ the festival holds over two days—19 and 20 September.
The festival, pushed forward after initial plans to have it hold over five days in Boston were scuttled, now holds in New York’s La Marina.
Blaming the refusal on short notice given Boston authorities said, ‘…for an event that spans several days, an organization should start working with the City’s Office of Special Events at least a year in advance. Events of this magnitude take considerable coordination between multiple city departments including the Boston Police Department, Boston Fire Department, EMS, Parks Department, Inspectional Services Department and others.’
AfrikCan’s creator Marie-Claude Mendy objected saying the festival was cleared months before.
The upheavals mean that some of the initial plans have had to be modified, starting with the shrinking to two days from five. Also artists like Benin’s Angelique Kidjo, Ivory Coast’s Alpha Blondy and South Africa’s Black Coffee will no longer be performing at the festival.
Nonetheless as stated earlier ‘Classic Man’ singer Jidenna remains on the bill; as does Wizkid. Ghana’s rising artist Wiyaala as well. Lira, Les Nubians, Ayo, Osekre and Young Paris are also on the line-up.
