Listen to Wizkid’s new single Kese (Dance)
Nigerian popstar Wizkid today dropped a new single titled ‘Kese’ (Dance)’ ahead of his impending new LP Morayo. The offering is available for streaming and download across all major digital platforms.
The song, released via RCA/Starboy, stresses the power of music to bring people together, while also depicting a lifestyle where money and pleasure take centre stage.
Throughout the record, Wizkid asserts his ability to energise any crowd, stressing in pidgin: “It’s a vibe anytime we dey there.” His references to material wealth are heard in lines such as “spray the money plenty” and “I no dey joke with my paycheck.”
‘Kese (Dance)’ follows the arrival of ‘Piece of My Heart’ released last month and featuring US act Brent Faiyaz. Unlike the latter, which fuses Afrobeats, R&B and Caribbean flavours to explore themes of love and connection, ‘Kese (Dance)’ takes a more upbeat turn, aimed squarely at the dancefloor.
The release of ‘Piece of My Heart’ marked the largest streaming debut for an African artist on Spotify, surpassing Wizkid’s earlier record ‘MMS’ featuring Asake, which had 870 577 streams on day one.
Morayo arrives on 22 November, in honour of the Grammy winner’s mother, who passed away in August 2023. Wizkid shares that he named the project after his mother to highlight his Nigerian roots and the significance of promoting Yoruba culture, while also expressing an interest in learning about other cultures.
Although widely recognised as a leading figure in Afrobeats, Wizkid took to Instagram earlier this year to reject the “Afrobeats artist” label, asserting that it restricts artistic freedom and emphasising his identity as an “artist first” with a broad musical range.
Wizkid is behind five other albums, the last arriving in November 2022.
