The event, to be held at the UKZN Centre for Jazz, is aimed at music professionals and creators, including students, producers, composers and songwriters. The session will focus on practical aspects of music publishing, rights management and licensing opportunities, particularly in the television and film industries.
Participants will be taken through topics such as music publishing fundamentals, agreement types, production music, licensing opportunities and rate card structures. The workshop will be free to attend.
Downtown Music Publishing Africa managing director, Thando Makhunga, said the initiative sought to give artists a better understanding of the business side of the music industry. “This workshop is about more than education, it’s about empowerment. We’re demystifying the business side of music and opening up new pathways for creatives to earn from their work. Through our partnership with UKZN, we’re making global industry knowledge accessible to the local communities,” she said.
The organisers said the workshop would also serve as a networking platform, with the aim of connecting KwaZulu-Natal creatives to opportunities in sync licensing, a field that has become increasingly important for sustainable careers in music.
The session is scheduled to run from 11am to 1pm on 11 September.
