The award scheme seeks to recognise the professionals and organisations driving growth, sustainability, and global recognition within Africa’s music industry.
The launch event brought together representatives from across the music and business sectors, including executives from Visa, CAPASSO, SAMRO, SAMPRA, Mercedes-Benz Motus, the City of Johannesburg, and national government institutions. The gathering underscored a shared commitment to strengthening Africa’s creative economy and celebrating the individuals and organisations contributing to its advancement.
Submissions for the first edition of the Music Business Awards Africa will open on 20 November 2025, with nominees to be announced on 1 February 2026. The main awards ceremony is scheduled for 1 May 2026 and will be organised in collaboration with key industry stakeholders and international partners.
The awards will be governed by a continental executive board composed of leading music business professionals and experts from across Africa. According to organisers, the MBAA will adopt internationally recognised systems and data-driven processes to ensure transparency and credibility. The trophies will be designed by the same global company responsible for the MTN-8 awards, reflecting the event’s commitment to high standards and craftsmanship.
Speaking at the launch, Music Business Academy founder Lesedi Mathonsi described the initiative as a milestone in recognising Africa’s music professionals. “This is more than an award show; it is a platform to redefine how Africa values the business of music and to honour those who continue to shape its evolution,” Mathonsi said.
The Music Business Awards Africa will recognise excellence across multiple areas of the industry, including record labels and distribution, publishing, rights management, legal and policy services, marketing, public relations, media, artist management, promotion, and brand partnerships.
