Spotify executive David Kaefer steps down amid leadership reshuffle
Spotify executive David Kaefer is leaving the company after seven years, in a move announced shortly after the appointment of new co-chief executives Gustav Söderström and Alex Norström.

Kaefer, who oversaw Spotify’s music and audiobook divisions, will depart at the end of the month. His exit was confirmed by company staff and detailed in an internal email circulated by Norström, who recently assumed the role of co-president and chief business officer following founder Daniel Ek’s transition to executive chairman.
“It has been a great pleasure to work with and learn from David Kaefer, particularly from his leadership across key music functions, including Editorial, Partnerships, and GTM, as well as his extensive experience navigating innovative industry deals,” Norström wrote in the memo. “I’ve always valued his strategic savviness, and his unique blend of toughness and humour.”
Charlie Hellman, a long-serving Spotify executive, will replace Kaefer as senior vice-president and global head of music. Hellman, who has been with the company for more than a decade, is credited with helping to develop several of the platform’s recommendation and social features.
In a farewell note to staff, Kaefer said he was looking forward to pursuing new opportunities focused on technology and media investment, as well as sustainability initiatives.
The sudden nature of Kaefer’s departure, following Ek’s shift in leadership, has raised speculation about broader changes at the company. Some employees have expressed concern that further executive exits could follow, particularly after Spotify’s recent rounds of layoffs.
Industry observers suggest the move may signal an ongoing restructuring at the Swedish streaming giant as it adapts to evolving market pressures and leadership transitions.
