Leading experts to explore digital music strategies at ACCES 2023
The 2023 Music In Africa Conference for Collaborations, Exchange and Showcases (ACCES) will host a panel discussion titled Digital Strategies to Amplify Voices in Emerging Music Markets at Mlimani City Conference Centre in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on 11 November from 2.30pm.
The discussion forms part of the ACCES 2023 conference programme, which features talks about the most important areas driving today’s African and global music industries. It will feature The Orchard director of distribution Mpumi Phillips (South Africa), Boomplay brand specialist Faith Hilary (Tanzania) and radio personality and media consultant Antoine Mensah (Ghana).
The panellists will use the platform to share information about the digital strategies they employ to connect artists and audiences from different regions while supporting music creators to thrive in the global arena.
With digital royalty collections doubling since the pre-COVID level of 2019, digital is now creators’ biggest income stream, overtaking TV and radio, according to the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers’ (CISAC’s) Global Collections Report for 2022. Amid the digital music revolution, a growing number of international and local record labels, distributors and streaming platforms are setting up operations in Africa, and in the process opening the door to a wide range of new opportunities for emerging artists.
In addition to discussing opportunities available in digital for Africa creatives, the speakers will talk about their specific areas of expertise.
Phillips previously managed the creative department at Sheer Publishing where she handled music clearances for film, television and commercials. She works with a wide range of clients, including artists, composers, production houses, advertising agencies and post-production companies.
Hilary is an experienced marketer who uses her skills and knowledge to support various Tanzanian music projects. She has helped build the Boomplay Music brand in Tanzania, supported the promotion of local artists, and built a strong relationship between Boomplay and music lovers.
Mensah, who will moderate the discussion, has worked with artists such as Trigmatic, Efya, Worlasi, Jayso and Amaarae. As an entrepreneur, he founded a number of operations including TIC Ghana, aftownmusic, IGrow Africa, and Ahaban – The Green Leaf Foundation. He consults for Simfy Africa’s super-app Ayoba as social media and content manager.
The discussion will also feature a Q&A session where the trio will respond to burning questions from delegates. It will be preceded by a presentation from South African rapper Siya ‘Slikour’ Metane at 1.45pm.
