Gambian musicians receive donations
A group of Gambian acts has received donations from a philanthropic establishment.
The Gambian charity organisation Vision Development Foundation (VDF) gave 100 000 dalasi ($2 000) to a number of local musicians recently.
The donation took place at the head office of the VDF in Banjul, Gambia, with Badibunka, Neneh Jali Suso, ST Singhateh and Jalimadi Kanuteh getting 25 000 dalasi ($500) each. The funds are intended to be put to use by young Gambians who have attempted to carve out a new image for their country.
“Today, I believe that this is a very important program because these are very young Gambians who have the talent and are very willing to showcase what they have," said VDF public relations' officer Saihou Fofana. "The other way round that we can create employment is to empower young people to also empower others.”
VDF, added Fofana, seeks to play a part as young persons make an effort to do what they can. “That is a credible thing for us. In national development, there are areas that all of us need to hold in one way or the other.”
Fofana also spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries and thanked the CEO of VDF, Momodou Turo Darboe, and the entire management of Vision Development Foundation. “We thank Darboe and the entire management of VDF. [He's] a philanthropist that doesn’t request anything in return."
Through VDF, Darboe also recently made donations to the students' body of Gambia College. "We want to tell him that he has supported the right people at the right time because we are the backbone of this nation that produces 70% of the nation’s workforce," the body's leader said in gratitude.
