Suntou Susso launches UK solo tour showcasing Mandinka griot traditions

The tour, titled The Future is Ancestral, began on 20 March at The Horton in Epsom and is scheduled to conclude on 12 June at the Prema Arts Centre in Uley, Gloucestershire. It features 29 performances across multiple cities, including Manchester, Cambridge, Cardiff, Bristol, Nottingham, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Bath.

Susso’s performances centre on the kora, a 22-string West African instrument closely associated with Mandinka cultural traditions. Born into a lineage of griots — hereditary historians, storytellers and musicians — he is regarded as both a custodian of this heritage and a contemporary interpreter of the form.

The tour follows the release of Jaliya Silokang – The Path of a Griot, his second album, which has received critical attention for its focus on identity, cultural legacy and performance. The live shows include a mix of original compositions and reinterpretations of traditional material.

Speaking about the project, Susso said the work reflects his role within the griot tradition and addresses broader social themes. “It’s about Jaliya - it’s about being a Griot. With this album I wanted to communicate to the young generation in terms of the environmental message and our culture, the importance of preserving it, and want the role of a Griot to be recognised for its important role during these crises.”

He added: “I have given it all my best as a young Griot, to make a change and inspire young people, and protect the planet we live on.”

The concerts are structured as solo performances, combining music with storytelling. According to tour information, the programme explores themes including heritage, identity, community and environmental awareness.

Susso’s recent work follows several years of touring and creative development after his debut release. Organisers describe the current tour as an opportunity to present his evolving sound while maintaining a connection to traditional Mandinka musical practices.
