Call for applications: 2021 Digital Democracy Challenge

The initiative is organised by Seedstars, an international investment and education company headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. It aims to develop innovative solutions to alleviate digital pain experienced by citizens living in countries with limited cyber freedom and communication.

“The Digital Democracy Challenge seeks innovative, low-cost, viable digital solutions to uphold civic and democratic public space when the rights to freedom of expression and association are restricted,” Seedstars says. “The internet and social media have facilitated information sharing beyond any other means of communication and are promising avenues to expand civil participation, while also reaching people who have to date been left behind democratic processes.

“But this potential will only be reached if freedom of expression and information can be ensured and digital means for civic engagement can be maintained. The programme comes at the forefront of finding novel solutions to promote digital democracy and uphold a democratic space.”

Who can apply?

This initiative is accepting applications from socially committed citizens worldwide, problem solvers, creative minds, democracy experts, programmers, graphic and web designers. The application process will finish on a demo day where the participants will pitch in front of a jury.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

• Be a team of more than three members.
• Be passionate about solving issues surrounding the decline of democracy globally.
• Already have an idea.

Pizes

• 1st place: $10 000 
• 2nd place: $8 000 
• 3rd place: $6 000

• Selection of participants: 18 September
• Announcement of winners: 1 October
