
Apple Music spotlights rising African artists in May’s Up Next programme
Apple Music has unveiled the latest crop of emerging African talent featured in its highly regarded Up Next artist development programme.
- Ghanaian neo-soul vocalist MiDi KwaKwa is among the artists featured in Apple Music May’s Up Next programme.
This May, four trailblazing artists – Jabulile Majola (South Africa), M3LON (Nigeria), MiDi KwaKwa (Ghana), and Royazdad (East Africa) – have been selected for their originality, authenticity, and cross-border appeal.
The Up Next initiative, which has spotlighted rising stars across the globe, continues to elevate African sounds to the international stage. The selected artists represent a diverse range of genres and regions, showcasing the depth and innovation driving the continent’s music evolution.
South Africa
Jabulile Majola delivers a heartfelt debut with Isitifiketi, a Zulu term meaning “certificate”. Raised in a Children’s Home in KwaZulu-Natal, Majola’s music fuses Afro-Folk with emotional storytelling, echoing traditional folk tales layered with acoustic warmth and spiritual introspection.
Nigeria
Afrobeats sensation M3LON bursts into the spotlight with his debut EP When Life Gives You Melons. Known for catchy hits like ‘London Girl’ and ‘Nepa’, the Ogun State native pairs rhythmic vibrancy with lyrical confidence. “2025 is about breaking every limit I ever knew,” he said.
Ghana
Neo-soul vocalist MiDi KwaKwa introduces herself through Moonflower, an EP reflecting on Black womanhood, mental health, and cultural identity. Her raw yet graceful delivery, rooted in Ghanaian heritage, marks her as a fearless voice in contemporary African soul.
East Africa
Representing Tanzania, Royazdad blends bongo flava, Afrobeats and soul to craft an emotionally charged and rhythmically rich sound. His mixtape The Cure and viral hit ‘Kioo’ have cemented his status as a rising star. “Fans can expect fresh sounds, big collaborations, and a mission to connect African music to the world,” he said.
Apple Music’s Up Next series continues to champion emerging global talent, with a genre-agnostic playlist curated to reflect the most exciting new voices. This month’s selection reinforces Africa’s place at the forefront of global music innovation, with each artist contributing a distinct voice to the continent’s dynamic soundscape.
