Apple Music introduces City Charts in SA, Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya
Apple Music this week launched its City Charts in more than 100 cities across the world, with six of them in Africa.
- The charts rank the top 25 songs in each city.
The African cities include Accra, Nairobi, Lagos, Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town. Each chart highlights the top 25 songs making waves in each city. The company says its City Charts combine plays and additional signs of local popularity to rank the songs, unlike standard charts that rate music based on the number of plays.
“With City Charts, Apple Music brings both global and local artists to the forefront of a new destination for music discovery,” a statement reads.
The charts are updated daily and featured on Apple Music’s Charts page. They can be accessed via the Browse or Search pages, or by asking Siri to play a local city chart. For example, to select the Lagos’ chart, users can simply say “Hey Siri, play the Top 25 Lagos.” Listeners can also add their favourite charts their library, download them and share them with friends.
City Charts adds to Apple Music’s range of chart offerings, which include its Daily Top 100: Global, iTunes, Shazam Discovery Top 50, and Shazam’s Top 200, among others.
Apple Music’s Daily Top 100 charts have become one of the most streamed playlists categories on the platform since the service was launched in 2015, with more than 4 000 songs from over 2 200 artists across 130 genres, that have reached No. 1 on one or more of the charts.
Apple Music also launched several other new product features for its subscribers.
The motion tool for artist detail pages allows artists to bring their personality to life by adding their own moving images to the page. Lyrics Sharing lets users share their favourite lyrics via messages, Facebook and Instagram Stories.
Additionally, record label pages give subscribers an overview of the latest and most popular releases compiled from hundreds of labels. Users can also find suggested labels and use the record labels filter to find exactly what they are looking for. Labels now have a dedicated page, which lets listeners explore other albums from their favourite labels.
