Accra to host inaugural Talking Drums Festival celebrating global hip hop
Ghana’s capital will host the first-ever Talking Drums Festival on 29 and 30 December 2025, a two-day event that aims to celebrate hip-hop’s global influence and its deep connections to African culture.

The festival is expected to attract tens of thousands of attendees from across the continent and the wider African diaspora. More than 40 artists from the United States, United Kingdom, and several African countries are set to perform during the 48-hour celebration, which will combine music, dance, and cultural showcases.
According to Ruddy Kwakye, executive producer of the event, the festival seeks to highlight hip-hop’s enduring impact across artistic disciplines. “For over 50 years, hip hop has influenced not just music fans but many other creative industries,” he said. “The Talking Drums Festival will celebrate this impact by uniting the rhythm, energy, and culture that connect the genre to Africa and its global audience.”
The festival forms part of a multi-year partnership with the Black Star Experience, a national branding initiative by the Government of Ghana. The collaboration builds on the legacy of the Beyond the Return campaign, which encourages members of the global Black diaspora to reconnect with Africa through culture, art, tourism, and heritage.
Presidential Coordinator for the Black Star Experience Rex Owusu Marfo said Ghana’s growing reputation as a cultural hub makes it a fitting host for the festival. “Ghana’s dynamic and diverse musical heritage, along with its vibrant cultural scene, positions the country as an ideal location for this celebration of hip hop, a genre that continues to influence cultures worldwide,” he said.
Organisers have indicated that the full line-up and programme details will be released soon. Fans can register for priority access and exclusive festival offers through the official website.
