Toya K
Bio
Toya K, born Latoya Vakamuina Kahere, is a Namibian singer and songwriter whose music bridges continents, cultures, and genres. Born in Windhoek and raised in Grashoek, a rural village in Namibia’s Tsumkwe constituency, Toya K’s artistic identity is deeply rooted in her upbringing within a Ju/’hoansi San community, where singing, dancing, and storytelling formed an essential part of everyday life. These early experiences nurtured her instinctive connection to rhythm, emotion, and communal expression.
Her sound is a fluid blend of Amapiano, R&B, Jazz, Afro-fusion, Soul, and Afropop, shaped by both African musical traditions and global influences. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Nina Simone, Etta James, Tems, and H.E.R, Toya K uses her voice as a storytelling instrument—warm, emotive, and deeply personal. Her music often reflects themes of resilience, identity, migration, healing, and transformation, informed by her lived experiences as an African woman navigating life and creativity in Europe.
Toya K began her musical journey through school choirs and talent shows, but her professional career officially launched in February 2022 with the release of her debut single “On Time.” The song quickly became her most-streamed track, introducing listeners to her distinctive vocal tone and thoughtful songwriting. Following personal and professional challenges in Namibia, she relocated to Europe—living and working across the Netherlands, Belgium, and Paris—where she continues to build her career independently, without major label backing.
Her artistic evolution culminated in the release of her debut EP, Divine Intervention, in October 2023. The five-track project—“Higher,” “Burn Me Up,” “Falling,” “Konganda,” and “Something New”—is both intimate and expansive, blending Amapiano rhythms with soul, R&B, and Afro-fusion textures. Described by the artist as “a piece of my heart, my journey, and my purpose,” the EP reflects significant life changes that Toya K describes as moments of spiritual alignment and growth.
A standout moment on the project is “Konganda,” performed in her native language Otjiherero, which adds a powerful cultural dimension to the EP and affirms her commitment to honoring her roots. Through her music, Toya K positions herself not only as an artist, but as a storyteller and cultural bridge—using sound as a tool for connection, healing, and positive community impact.
Now active within the European music scene, Toya K continues to perform, collaborate, and refine her sound. With her debut body of work, she signals the arrival of an artist whose journey is only beginning—one shaped by courage, cultural memory, and an unwavering belief in music as purpose.
