Bio
Sinkane is the musical project of Sudanese-American musician Ahmed Abdullahi Gallab (born c. 1983), known for blending krautrock, prog rock, electronica, free jazz, funk rock, and Sudanese pop into a richly layered, global sound. He is signed to City Slang Records.
Born in London to Sudanese college professors, Gallab spent his early childhood in Sudan before moving to the United States at the age of five. He lived in Provo, Utah, and later in Kent, Ohio, where he attended Theodore Roosevelt High School, graduating in 2002. He went on to study at The Ohio State University in Columbus.Before launching his solo career, Gallab worked as a session musician with a wide range of artists including Eleanor Friedberger, Caribou, of Montreal, Born Ruffians, and Yeasayer. His versatility across genres helped shape Sinkane’s expansive musical identity.
Gallab is also the vocalist and music director of the Atomic Bomb! Band, a collective dedicated to performing the music of Nigerian funk pioneer William Onyeabor. The group has featured collaborators such as David Byrne, Damon Albarn, Dev Hynes (Blood Orange), Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), Jamie Lidell, Pharoah Sanders, Joshua Redman, Amadou & Mariam, and many others.In theatre, Gallab composed the music for Roald Dahl’s The Enormous Crocodile musical adaptation, which premiered at Leeds Playhouse in December 2023 and later at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in London in May 2024. His work earned him a nomination for Best Composer, Lyricist or Book Writer at the Stage Debut Awards.
Sinkane released their sixth studio album, Life & Livin’ It, on 10 February 2017. Gallab has appeared on major television platforms, including performances on Late Show with David Letterman (with of Montreal) and Conan as a solo artist.Through Sinkane, Gallab continues to explore music as a space of migration, memory, rhythm, and cultural fusion.
