Percy Mfana

Bio

Percy Mfana is a prominent South African Xitsonga musician, singer, composer and cultural artist known for his deep contribution to traditional Tsonga music. Based in Xikundu village in the Malamulele area of Limpopo Province, Mfana has earned widespread recognition for his mastery of Shangaan and Tsonga‑rooted traditional sounds that resonate across communities in South Africa and beyond.

Mfana’s musical journey began in Shangaan disco before he was encouraged by the late musical maestro Matswa Bemuda to focus on Tsonga traditional music. Responding to Bemuda’s advice that there was a space for an artist with his unique voice in the genre, Mfana embraced traditional music and began crafting songs that blend cultural narratives with rich linguistic expression.

Growing up with strong influences from established artists like Dr Thomas Chauke, Mfana was discovered singing in a local shebeen by Patson, who took him into the studio and helped launch his recording career. His music often tackles social themes relevant to his community, for example, his album Va na tshiri (rhwayi xirivani) addresses issues around migration and cultural identity among Tsonga people.

Over the years, Percy Mfana has released numerous albums, with reports noting his 16th album as a milestone celebration for fans nationwide — and his songs remain staples in the Tsonga music scene. In recognition of his artistic excellence and cultural impact, Mfana received the Dr Thomas Chauke Artist of the Year award at the Munghana Lonene FM Xitsonga Music Awards, one of the most prestigious honours in the genre.

His work continues to celebrate and preserve Xitsonga heritage, making him not only a beloved performer but also a custodian of cultural tradition through music.
