Mercy Pakela – Queen of Pantsulas Still Revered for Her Influence

Mercy Pakela’s impact on South Africa’s dance music landscape remains significant decades after her breakthrough. Born in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth, Pakela moved to Johannesburg in 1982 to pursue a music career after starting to sing at 16.

Her early work with Lena Khama and Girlie Mafura in the group Ebony led to a contract with MFM, where she developed the sound that would define her career. Pakela quickly became known for her dynamic live performances, adopting the stage persona Tunkie Tunkie. Her energetic style earned her the widely used title Queen of Pantsulas.

Pakela’s biggest commercial success came with the hit “Ayashis’Amateki”, which became a staple of the Pantsula movement. Other key songs from her early catalogue include Ndizo Kulinda”, “I Will Hold On”, “Respect”, “Careless Doctor” and “It Hurts So Bad”.

In 1989, producer Godfrey Nzuza reunited with the MFM team to record Pakela’s album Young and Beautiful. The project featured “Taximan”, the title track and a song marking the construction of the country’s largest stadium.

Pakela remains a central figure in the history of Pantsula culture. Her recordings and performances helped define an era and continue to influence artists working in South African dance music today.
