Mau from Nowhere
Bio
mau from nowhere blends hip-hop, R&B, and electronic textures into a soulful, genre-bending sound. Raised between Nairobi, the UK, and the Netherlands, mau’s music is both urgent and meditative — weaving melodic raps with reflective songwriting. His eclectic sound has drawn comparisons to the likes of BINA, Obongjayar, and Yinka Bernie, while his wider influences span from Outkast to Bloc Party and Madlib, grounding his work in a borderless sonic identity.
mau’s recent catalogue includes his 2025 collaborative album PRESSURE with producer hihi, featuring the standout single Let It Pass, which was featured on COLORS and OkayAfrica. The larger album was spotlighted by OkayAfrica, Music Crowns, Urbanista Magazine, Wordplay Magazine, and more, cementing his place as a rising artist with global resonance. In 2024, mau released his second EP SOFT STEPS, a seven-track project acclaimed by Atwood Magazine, 1883, and CLASH, with the latter praising the work for “allowing him to step confidently into the unknown.” His earlier releases include a four-track EP and the full-length album The Universe is Holding You, chronicling the evolution of his sound.
As a performer, mau has steadily built his live repertoire and reputation, carrying the same sonic resonance and authenticity to the stage. In anticipation of his second album’s release, mau threw a free album preview show for fans at The Mall in Nairobi in collaboration with local underground event Zahabu. This saw the biggest Zahabu turnout to date and marked a milestone in his live journey as well as Nairobi’s alternative live music landscape. Most recently, mau graced Kilele 2026 with a full band, delivering an exemplary performance that further solidified his presence as a compelling live act.
Over the past few years, mau has notched notable career highlights such as being named Apple Music’s Up Next Artist (May 2023), collaborating with artists across borders, and having his music featured on COLORS, one of the most influential global music platforms. His music continues to offer a breath of fresh air in an industry saturated with convention.
