SA: Mphathiwohlelo MC shares new maskandi album

Maskandi artist Mphathiwohlelo MC has released a new 15-track album titled Ngathi Ngiyosebenza, marking his latest contribution to the traditional Zulu music genre.

The album, released on 29 May through Africori and Mphathiwohlelo MC Entertainment, was produced by Mphathiwohlelo MC in collaboration with Thabiso Shange.
Sung entirely in isiZulu, Ngathi Ngiyosebenza explores themes of work, perseverance, family responsibilities, love and survival. The project draws on traditional maskandi elements, including guitar-driven arrangements and narrative-style songwriting, while incorporating contemporary influences.
According to information released alongside the album, the project reflects the experiences of ordinary people navigating social and economic challenges, with a focus on resilience and community life.
The album features collaborations with several artists, including Siyanda and Shenge, Mjolisi and Siphokazi, Gugu Ndlovu, Solwazi, Mshana Kazwelonke and Vivi.
Maskandi, a genre deeply rooted in Zulu cultural traditions, has experienced growing popularity in recent years, attracting younger audiences while maintaining its connection to storytelling and indigenous musical practices. Ngathi Ngiyosebenza continues this tradition through songs that address everyday experiences and personal reflection.
The release adds to a growing catalogue of contemporary maskandi music that seeks to balance cultural preservation with evolving musical styles.
