Distruction Boyz
Bio
Distruction Boyz is a Gqom duo from Durban made up of Thobani "Que" Mgobhozi and Zipho "Goldmax" Mthembu. They grew up in KwaMashu, where they first built their reputation by playing energetic sets at local venues and community events. Their shared interest in hard-hitting electronic rhythms led them to collaborate, shaping a sound defined by raw drum patterns, minimalist textures and an unmistakable Durban pulse.
The duo rose to national prominence with "Omunye", a track that became one of the defining Gqom hits of its time and earned gold certification. The success of Omunye prepared the way for their debut album Gqom Is The Future, a project that later received gold status and became the first Gqom album to achieve that milestone. The project strengthened their position as leaders of the Durban Gqom movement and helped push the genre into mainstream spaces.
Distruction Boyz continued to influence the dance landscape through performances, collaborations and production work for emerging artists. Their music became a reference point for dancers, DJs and producers who sought the high-energy style associated with Durban clubs. In 2023 they announced a temporary pause to focus on individual paths, while expressing intention to reunite in future. The impact of their early work remains central to the evolution of modern South African electronic music.
