Dhahabu

Bio

Qondea Avril Mkansi, known by her stage name Dhahabu, is a South African
singer songwriter, storyteller, and the creative force behind AfroArtRock. As the
originator and defining voice of this genre defying sound, she blends African
expression, experimental artistry, and emotionally rich storytelling into a musical
identity that refuses confinement. Rooted deeply in African heritage and driven by
a bold resistance to being boxed into conventional categories, Dhahabu is known
for her genre fluid compositions and narrative driven songwriting. Her music is not
simply heard, it is experienced. Each song carries the weight of memory, land,
lineage, and lived truth. She has pioneered a sound she calls Tsonga Country, a
bold fusion of Tsonga musical elements, language, and oral storytelling traditions
with the melodic structures and emotional openness associated with country
music. In doing so, she reclaims country as the sound of the land itself. Tsonga
Country bridges worlds rarely placed in conversation, creating music that is both
intimate and culturally expansive. Dhahabu began performing professionally at the
age of 10 and has remained an active presence in the music and performance

scene ever since. Her theatrical foundation informs her commanding stage
presence and her ability to transform song into embodied narrative. Beyond her
artistry, she is a passionate advocate for children's right to play and creative
expression. She is the Founder and Managing Director of Kids Theatre, a Cape
Town based arts initiative dedicated to expanding access to arts education for
children in underserved communities. Through theatre and music, she works to
bridge the gap between small communities and meaningful artistic opportunity,
using performance as both empowerment and healing.
