Benny Mayengani
Bio
Benny Mayengani, Mayengani Benny Baloyi, on 11 January 1979 in Bolobedu in Limpopo Province. He is a Xitsonga musician whose work has played a significant role in popularising modern Tsonga music across South Africa.
He rose to prominence in 2011 with the release of his debut album Tiba Ben. The album introduced his energetic vocal style and marked the beginning of a successful recording career. He has since released a long list of albums, including President Mayengani, Ntombhi yaku xonga, Vitanani Fire Brigade and Ni Happy. His sound is known for its blend of traditional Xitsonga melodies with contemporary production, creating a style that is both culturally rooted and widely accessible.
Mayengani has also pursued education and public service. In 2024 he completed an honours degree in public management and governance at the University of Johannesburg. His political involvement includes serving as a Johannesburg city councillor before resigning in 2019. In 2023 he founded the Action Alliance Development Party with the aim of contributing to development and community upliftment.
He remains an influential figure in the Xitsonga music industry and continues to be recognised for his artistic output as well as his engagement with social and political issues.
