Nigerian-British artist DEELA has been named Spotify’s EQUAL Africa artist of the month, in recognition of her growing influence and genre-blending approach to rap, hip-hop and Afro-infused music.
DEELA.
The streaming platform highlighted her selection as part of its ongoing EQUAL Africa initiative, which aims to amplify women shaping the continent’s contemporary music landscape.
DEELA, born in Lagos and raised between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, has built a catalogue that draws on both West African musical traditions and UK underground sounds. Her work combines rap and melodic experimentation, with early releases such as ‘FIT’, ‘Anyways’ and ‘Watchu Mean’ helping to establish her presence in the industry.
Her 2025 album Wicked marked a key milestone in her career, featuring tracks including ‘Slide’ and ‘Why Always Me?’, which showcase her rhythmic and lyrical approach to genre fusion.
Speaking on her selection, Spotify’s head of music for Sub-Saharan Africa, Phiona Okumu, said DEELA represents a new wave of African artists shaping global music conversations.
“DEELA’s music reflects the creativity and drive shaping Africa’s current music scene,” Okumu said. “As part of Spotify’s EQUAL programme, she represents how African women are advancing visibility, driving opportunities, and building global connections through their art.”
DEELA said her sound is driven by confidence, creative freedom and enjoyment of the process.
She described her music as “exciting, cheeky, and lively”, adding that her approach is rooted in a sense of artistic flow and self-assurance.
She also spoke about the importance of consistency and self-belief for emerging artists, advising: “Stay consistent - good things come to those who wait.”
On navigating the industry as a woman, she said visibility and self-advocacy are essential, stressing the importance of confidence in professional spaces.
“I always put myself out there. The best people you meet are outside, and it's important to always talk positively about yourself in these rooms,” she said. “It feels daunting taking up space, but that’s the best way to navigate the music industry as a woman.”
She added that her mindset around positivity and affirmation is reflected in her lyrics and creative outlook.
When asked what being part of the EQUAL programme means to her, DEELA said it represents visibility and confidence for women in music.
“Being unapologetic and taking up space. It’s an honour to be selected amongst such an all-star alumni,” she said.
