Basha Uhuru

Bio

Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival, commonly known as Basha Uhuru, is a Johannesburg-based creative festival hosted at Constitution Hill.

Founded in 2012 by Constitution Hill, the festival honours the youth who took to the streets during the 1976 Soweto Uprising and aims to give young people “freedom through creativity.”

Basha Uhuru runs as a multi-day programme that mixes industry-facing development with public celebration. The festival’s Creative Week features masterclasses, panel discussions, workshops and industry dialogues focused on business skills, design, media and other creative disciplines; the programme culminates in the Sounds of Freedom music showcase.

Organisers describe the festival as more than a music event: it functions as a development platform that connects aspiring creatives with experienced industry practitioners and provides performance opportunities, mentorship and capacity-building activities.

Since its launch, Basha Uhuru has expanded into a signature annual cultural moment at Constitution Hill, drawing national media attention and partnerships with cultural institutions. The festival returned to full-scale live programming after pandemic interruptions and celebrated milestone editions that emphasise both legacy and youth creativity
