Ali Ibrahim "Ali Farka" Touré (31 October 1939 – 6 March 2006) was a Malian singer, guitarist, and multi-instrumentalist, widely regarded as one of Africa’s most internationally acclaimed musicians. He is celebrated for blending traditional Malian music with African American blues, creating a unique sound that became known as desert blues. Touré’s pioneering style bridged cultures and generations, earning him recognition as one of the continent’s most influential artists.
His exceptional guitar work and musical innovation earned him critical acclaim, with Rolling Stone ranking him number 76 on their list of “The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” and Spin magazine placing him at number 37 on its “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.” Touré’s music remains influential, inspiring generations of musicians both in Africa and globally.
Following his death, his legacy continued through groups of musicians performing in his style. The Ali Farka Touré Allstars emerged in 2012, followed by the formation of the Ali Farka Touré Band in 2014, keeping his sound and artistic vision alive for new audiences.
