Mr Mokoena
Bio
I was born Malefane Masilo Mokoena III, named after my grandfather and my father. Last born in a blended family of eight brothers and sisters. My early musical influence was from church spirituals and chorale, as well as sangoma initiates (mathwasane) who used to sing throughout the night (dinyaonyao) by my grandfather’s house, leaving their initiation annually to go be healers in their communities. My mother was a lover of song; I can almost hear her humming a hymn as recollections of her going about her everyday chores around the house. My father is surprisingly a very good singer, something that I discovered in recent years, in his old age, as we were celebrating one of his big milestone birthdays. The core of my music is heavily influenced by Basotho folklore, with nuances of jazz and soul music.
