Monst-R

Monst-R is an Algerian rapper, filmmaker, and Hip Hop cultural activist working at the intersection of music, cinema, and research. His practice is rooted in Hip Hop as both an artistic expression and a tool for documenting memory, resistance, and identity through a Pan-African perspective.
On stage, Monst-R rejects playback, delivering raw and high-energy live performances alongside a DJ, emphasizing authenticity and direct engagement with the audience. His musical approach is grounded in classic Hip Hop while engaging with diverse African influences, reflecting a broader Pan-African dialogue.
Beyond music, Monst-R is actively involved in cinema, working in both directing and production. His documentary work focuses on Hip Hop culture in Algeria and the Maghreb, exploring its histories, narratives, and transformations. His current academic research, as part of a Master’s degree in film criticism, centers on Hip Hop archives and the process of transforming cultural memory into cinematic documentation.
He also develops podcasts and discussion formats dedicated to Hip Hop, creating spaces for dialogue around its evolution, aesthetics, and socio-political impact in Algeria and across Africa. Through writing, research, and public conversations, his work contributes to positioning Hip Hop as a field of knowledge and cultural production.
Monst-R has collaborated with artists from across the African continent and performed in various cultural contexts. In 2024, he participated in Panaf Summit in Zanzibar as an artist and speaker, contributing to discussions on the role of artists in shaping African futures.
His latest project is an extensive mixtape of over 40 tracks, bringing together multiple collaborations with artists across Africa and reflecting years of artistic development.
Through a multidisciplinary approach that connects sound, image, and research, Monst-R continues to expand the possibilities of Hip Hop as a space for creation, documentation, and cultural transmission.
