Bio
Mathunzi M is a creative multi hyphenate working in the South African entertainment industry since the year 2010. In her capacity as a musician she uses her training in musical theatre, jazz and popular music and performance across art fields to travel through genres and stages. Soul, jazz, gospel and African music are the core genres of performance and production for The Verse but most definitely not the limits of exploration as far as music is concerned. Her ensemble is is known popularly as Mathunzi and The Verse flanked by Teboho Kobedi (DiTeboho), a South African pianist, composer, lecturer and performer; and Thulani Sithela, drummer, educator, gospel singer and musical director, since 2014. Instrumentals and vocalists such as Thato Modika, Ariel Zamonsky, Keorapetse Kolwane, Ncamisa Nqana, Thabsie, Lally Tshabalala and Molefe Moeketsi have supported the ensemble.
In 2013 Mathunzi released her debut single “In the Business” with renowned producer John Lundun. Long standing co composers and collaborators who have released works with Mathunzi include Teboho Kobedi, Mpendulo Sibanyoni and Simz Kulla. Her 2024 afro pop single “Inhliziyo” features soul and rap artist Kabomo as she taps into the afro pop market.
From opening for the likes of Nduduzo Makhathini and Wanda Baloyi at the South African State theatre to corporate performance at the Gold reef city casino. Private events like celebrity weddings to live radio performances on Yfm’s Live and Rewired. Producing soundtracks for film and television soundtracks to authoring for various artists. Rodger’s and Hammerstein to Winston Mankunku Ngozi, Mathunzi’s musical exploration extends far and wide while maintaining her integrity as an African born and bred creative.
Mathunzi also works as a curator and project manager for various music projects as well as a producer and director for music videos under her production company The Verse Productions. Clients include Dudu Makhoba, DiTeboho, Thami Mahlangu, Rorisang Sechele, Ntando Ngcapu, Thabiso Mfana and many more
